A farewell card is read more than once. Years later people still remember who wrote what. Luckily a good message is not hard to write if you follow a simple recipe.

The recipe: three sentences

  • A memory. "I still laugh about the day the printer jammed during the board meeting."
  • A thank you. "Thank you for always taking the time to explain things to me."
  • A wish. "I hope your new job brings you everything you hoped for."

Keep it personal

Use their name. Mention something only you two share. A specific detail beats ten generic words like "all the best".

What to avoid

  • Inside jokes that nobody else (or HR) will understand
  • Complaints about the company, even as a joke
  • Very long stories: aim for three to six sentences

Add a photo

A photo of a team lunch or a shared project makes a message come alive. With a group card on Emailkaarten.nl every colleague can add one, and the card is shown as a slideshow on the last working day.

Examples

"Anna, the office will be quieter without your laugh. Thank you for three great years, good luck at your new adventure!"

"Pieter, you taught me more in a year than any course did. I will miss our morning coffee. Stay in touch!"
