Saying sorry in writing is easier than in person, and it gives the other person time. A good apology card is short, specific and has no “but”.
Four parts of a real apology
- Say what you did: “I should not have raised my voice at the meeting.”
- Say that you are sorry, without an excuse.
- Say what you will do differently.
- Leave room: “Whenever you are ready, I would like to talk.”

Examples
- “I am sorry for what I said on Friday. You did not deserve it.”
- “I forgot your birthday and I feel terrible. Let me make it up to you.”
- “I was wrong, and I am sorry. I value our friendship.”

What to avoid
Do not write “I am sorry you feel that way” or “but you also…”. Do not explain for three paragraphs. Do not ask for forgiveness in the same card; give them space.

A sorry card from a team
If the team has to apologise, for a missed delivery or a mistake, one card with a message from everyone can show that it matters. Keep it honest and small.
Say sorry properly
Make a sorry card, alone or together. Start a card.
