People type ecard, e-card, e card, ecards and e-cards, or say digital card, electronic greeting card or e-mail card. For a search engine and for you they mean the same: a greeting card that arrives by e-mail. A short guide to the words.

Is an ecard the same as an e-card?

Yes. Ecard, e-card and e card are three spellings of the same word; e-card with a hyphen is the most common in Dutch and ecard without one in English. The plural is ecards or e-cards.

What is the difference between an e-card and a digital card?

None in practice. “Digital card” is the plainer word, “e-card” the shorter one. Both mean a greeting card that you send by e-mail or as a link instead of by post. A group e-card is a digital card with many writers: see e-card: what it is and how to send one.

What is an e-greeting card or electronic card?

It is the longer, more formal word for the same thing: a greeting card in electronic form. You will meet it in older texts and on large card sites. The card can be an image, an animation or, like on Emailkaarten.nl, a slideshow with messages and photos.

What is an e-mail card?

An e-mail card is an e-card that is delivered by e-mail. Nearly all e-cards are, which is why the word is used for all of them. Emailkaarten.nl is Dutch for exactly that: e-mail cards (“emailkaarten”) for groups.

Which word should I search for?

Use the one that fits what you want: “ecard” or “e-card” to find ideas and designs, “digital card” to find how to send one, and “group card” or “group e-card” if many people have to write. If you are in a hurry, make a digital card in five steps.
